During IAP 2003, Chris Carbone, Paul Kassabian, Dana Ozik & Todd Radford led an activity titled "Adventures in Ice Structures: Creating a World of Frozen Wonder". Below are stages in the process that led to Kresge Oval being populated overnight with surreal free-standing forms.

This sign was very nearly informative. The most useful information was the last line. |
The basic idea was to hang sheets of fabric in something like natural shapes ... |
... using supports made from wood, string, and weather balloons ... |
... coat them with water to freeze into successive thin layers of ice ... |
... mostly using spray bottles that kept freezing up ... |
... and eventually remove the supports ... |
... leaving the structures standing ...
... or moving them to interesting new locations. |
And there you have it. |
The visual results could be bizarrely organic. |
Cute, too. |

The next morning mystified passerby with a silent tent city among the naked trees. |
During the night we learned previously unimagined definitions of the word "cold". |
Only this oasis of indoor warmth and chocolatey goodness kept us alive. |
NOT recommended with bare hands at these temperatures. |
